The Syrian architect Mohamad Hafez received a one-way ticket to the United States. Missing his homeland, he decided to create a stand-in, sculpting life-like miniatures of the Damascus cityscape he had left behind.
"A Broken House" is a story of love, loss, and creating pathways home.
It premiered at Hot Docs, played Hamptons Film Festival and Aspen ShortsFest; won “Best Documentary Short” at Oscar-qualifying River Run and Salem Film Festival, and the “Bridging the Borders” prize and Audience Award for “Best Documentary” at Palm Springs ShortsFest.
